God’s Comfort in Affliction: 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (ESV)

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”

Context

In 2 Corinthians, Paul opens by praising God for His comfort and mercy. Paul himself endured many hardships and trials for the sake of the gospel, and he wanted to remind the Corinthians that God is the ultimate source of comfort during difficult times. Not only does God provide comfort, but He also calls us to pass that comfort on to others who are suffering.

Devotional

In the midst of trials and pain, 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 offers us a profound reminder: God is the source of all comfort. No matter what we’re going through, He is there to offer compassion, peace, and healing. Paul also highlights the purpose of this comfort—it’s not just for us, but also for those around us. When we experience God’s comfort, we are equipped to comfort others who are going through similar struggles. This creates a beautiful cycle of compassion and care within the body of Christ. God’s mercy transforms our suffering, using it as a way for us to connect with and support others in their time of need.

Practical Tip

Think of someone you know who may be going through a difficult time. Reach out to them, offer your support, and share how God has comforted you in your own trials. Let your experience be a source of encouragement and strength for them, reminding them that God’s comfort is always available.
